Think of the Outdoor Research Ascendant Pants as grabbing the best from puffy style insulation and fleece insulation and combining them into an awesome package. It has the amazing warmth to weight ratio and compressibility of a Primaloft synthetic fill pant, but with the wicking and breathability of a fleece fabric. 

Basically the Polartec® Alpha® Direct Insulation that is used is like an extremely high lofting fleece which is not dense at all but traps air more like a synthetic puffy fill. Seeing as that insulation is all about trying to trap air, it achieves this but with a fibre that also wicks really well. 

This pant is definitely worth a look for alpine climbers and mountaineers (even high altitude work as a mid layer), ice climbers, skiers, snow shoers or anyone moving in freezing temperatures.
